  • Overview

    This position will assist in the creation, implementation and management of comprehensive Compliance Monitoring and Audit Programs for Fairview Pharmacy Services (FPS). This work will include focus on Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regulations and compliance, drug diversion prevention, policy and procedure compliance and risk mitigation.

    The Coordinator will be the primary resource for FPS controlled substance programs including a monitoring and surveillance program based on industry best practices and DEA requirements. This position will:

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant DEA requirements and coordinate high-risk drug monitoring, surveillance and audit activities. This will include conducting in-depth analyses of all movement of controlled substances for the prevention of diversion and DEA compliance, investigation of orders of interest, and evaluation of medication return data for monitoring down-stream controls.

    • Conduct additional monitoring and audits as needed based on current and changing trends for FPS.

    • Report and communicate results from the monitoring and audit activities and recommend action when necessary.

    The Coordinator will work closely with multiple departments within the organization, as well as other professionals outside of the organization, to facilitate change and minimize risks associated with drug mishandling and/or diversion for the overall operations of Fairview Pharmacy Services. This includes assistance with investigations related to audit findings and the development and implementation of remediation plans.

    Job Expectations:

    • Develop and manage programs and systems for DEA regulation and process compliance and controlled substance oversight.

    • Assist in the creation, implementation and management of a comprehensive surveillance and auditing program to assist in the prevention and/or detection of drug diversion and enhance pharmacy operations.

    • Coordinate and execute compliance monitoring protocols as well as random and specific audits as needed in areas of concern or high risk throughout Fairview Pharmacy Services.

    • Assist in staff education, promoting and monitoring compliance to FPS policies and procedures related to theft prevention, safety, and inventory control, as well as other elements of the compliance program.

    • Leverage data mining skills (data analysis) to evaluate all sources of necessary data and exception reporting to monitor, identify, investigate and mitigate compliance risks.

    • Use technical skills and tools to create reports that identify and summarize monitoring and audit findings such as policy or process gaps, legal or regulatory deficiencies or other deviation in target areas to articulate and/or quantify concern and risk.

    • Investigate when monitoring discrepancies or suspect audit findings suggest further review is required.

    • Purchase, store and distribute all controlled drugs if applicable.

    • Responsible for maintenance and oversight of required narcotic records if applicable

    Qualifications

    Required Experience

    • 3 years experience in a pharmacy environment or a combination of equivalent education and experience

    License/Certification/Registration

    • Registered as Pharmacy Technician with the MN State Board of Pharmacy

    Preferred Education

    • Bachelor's degree in related field

    Preferred Experience

    • 2 years experience in conducting drug monitor audits and investigations, data analysis or modeling including large data sets

    • General compliance and monitoring experience

    • Working knowledge of controlled substance laws

    License/Certification/Registration

    • Certified Pharmacy Technician, registered with the MN State Board of Pharmacy
