    Institutional Research & Decision Support is the first-choice provider of timely, high-quality, accessible information and analysis for informed decision-making at Stanford. IR&DS analyzes and reports on data from all of Stanford's major administrative systems, including student, faculty, course, research, and financial data. IR&DS performs and facilitates complex analyses for university leadership, departments, and central offices, including collaborating with other universities to provide comparative data and proactively publishing dashboards and management reports.

    IR&DS administers Stanford's Data Governance Program which is dedicated to ensuring analysts and decision-makers across the University have well-curated, accessible, consistent, transparent, high-quality data assets which support their work.

    ABOUT THE ROLE:

    We are seeking a Business Analyst who will be responsible for supporting the data governance program. The data governance program scope includes Stanford administrative data, including financial, human resources, student records, and other data used in administrative applications. The analyst will participate in the ongoing management and documentation of Stanford's data assets using our data governance processes and tools. They will provide primary support for each subject area and coordination among subject areas, data management partners, and technical resources. They will review and monitor governance activities including data cataloging, master data management, identification of data lineage, data quality measurement, security, privacy and compliance requirements, and issues of data sharing.

    The Data Analyst will report to the Data Governance Program Director.

    CORE DUTIES:

    • Support the implementation, maintenance, and extension of end-to-end data governance processes and tools.

    • Collaborate with data owner, stewards, and managers to define, implement, and document data standards and common data elements for data collection and analysis.

    • Facilitates data governance activities supporting data owners, data stewards, data users, and other partners in governance workgroups.

    • Collect, manage, and clean datasets using extraction tools and reporting programming language to document data lineage for critical administrative data. Show how and where key data is used across the university and ensure its integrity and consistency.

    • Develop and produce dashboards, key performance indicators, and other recognized metrics to monitor and report data governance activities. Collect and analyze metric data enabling continuous improvement of data quality, consistency, and availability.

    • Research and reconcile data discrepancies occurring among various business processes, information systems, analyses, and reports.

    • Identify new sources of data and methods to improve data collection, analysis, and reporting.

    • Monitors, supports, and ensures accurate and timely inclusion of metadata content like business glossary definitions and access policies in data governance center.

    • Works with technical partners to ensure infrastructure that supports governance activities.

    • May test prototype software and participate in approval and release process for new software.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.

    Experience in data governance strongly preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to describe and document how information flows through a complex organization, how it is captured, transformed, and analyzed in administrative computer systems, and how it may be described in metadata.

    • Experience managing data in enterprise-scale applications preferred.

    • Basic knowledge and demonstrated experience using and applying database management system software, such as ETL Software, analytical software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.

    • Experience with Data Catalog/ Meta-data Management systems like Collibra, Alation or similar platforms preferred.

    • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and communicate results in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.

    • Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail.

    • Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.

    • Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.

    • Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers.

    The expected pay range for this position is $74,000 to $97,000 per annum.
