  • Position Objective: Provide services as a Bioinformatics System Analyst in support of the overall functions of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As a Bioinformatics system analyst at CARD, you will support and extend the CARD Longread sequencing team developing pipelines for data management, processing and analytics.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Generate and optimize programs and scripts for the analysis of data; create programs and algorithms and develop computational infrastructure resources for organizing and parsing data from large and complex data.

    • Provide broad-based programming and analytic support for a wide variety of bioinformatic and research projects.

    • Managing and organizing all incoming data files from the Oxford Nanopore longread sequencer and regularly monitoring and evaluating information and data systems that can impact analytical results 1

    • Develop scripts for consistency, accuracy and reproducibility Perform computational analysis of, and interpret results.

    • Provide reports based on analysis of scientific data.

    • Establishing new automated analysis methods and applying these to large-scale long-read sequencing datasets 3

    • Collaborate with scientists to design, analyze, manage and interpret all types of data.

    • Work with staff on planning of experiments, and data analysis for internal and collaborative projects; use bioinformatics expertise to advise and help bench scientists on experimental design and trouble-shooting.

    • Maintain proper and detailed documentation of the analysis performed and report results at lab meetings.

    • Prepare scientific reports and progress reports; assemble data to prepare tables, graphs and slides; conduct scientific and program related information searches and report results.

    • Processing the raw long-read sequencing data and running it through analysis pipelines. 2

    • Work closely with lab personnel to process and organize data for small and medium size projects. Utilize and adapt existing bioinformatics techniques to check for trends and patterns in the data. Perform data processing and data analysis with existing computational and statistical methods.

    • Work with staff on the development and maintenance of bioinformatics tools, scripts and pipe-lines for data.

    • Analyze and evaluate data cleaning and harmonization needs in the using a variety of descriptive statistics and analytic methods.

    • Instruct staff in computational analysis of data.

    • Provide training of students, new investigators, and other laboratory personnel in the use of techniques, procedures and equipment to complete the objectives of the laboratory.

    • Work with staff, collaborate with outside researchers, and contribute to positive overall teamwork; teach Bioinformatics principles and methodologies.

    • Collaborate with biologists, statisticians and/or other bioinformaticians in the design of models summarizing/explaining experimental data.

    • Attend group meetings; present findings; author publications resulting from projects.

    • Work products and documents related to managing and organizing all incoming data files from the Oxford Nanopore longread sequencer and regularly monitoring and evaluating information and data systems that can impact analytical results - Ad-Hoc

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related area and equivalent experience/training.

    • Knowledge of applications programming, scripting and web development (UNIX, R, or Python).

    • Knowledge of common workflow languages like CWL or WDL.

    • Experience with use of genomic sequencing data workflows .

    • Demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.

    • Demonstrated ability to work with large data sets.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with high performance computing and cloud computing, terra preferred.

    • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.

    • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively and diplomatically with both internal and external technical and non-technical personnel at various levels.

    • Ability to communicate technical information and scientific concepts in a clear and concise manner.

    • Ability to self- motivate, learn quickly, pay attention to detail and meet deadlines

    • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.

    • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

    • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
