So You Want to Become a Personal Trainer to the Stars

Gwyneth Paltrow’s personal trainer, Tracy Anderson, helped the 38-year-old actress and mother of two sculpt a bikini body America’s Next Top Model would love.  Of course, even with Tracy’s help Gwyneth had to do some “heavy lifting.”

If you’re seeking a career as a personal trainer, you’ll need to take classes in physical exercise and nutrition. Creating and developing your own unique style of exercise will also help. The same goes for adding a new twist to a nutritional diet. And, of course, you’ll need to create and market a DVD, ideally featuring a film or TV personality (this is the hard part). Some have suggested you do a Google search of your high-school and college classmates and find out if any of them made it in film or TV.

To maintain a model’s figure, Tracy’s plan calls for two-hour daily workouts six days a week and strict diet plan. Her 30-day plan takes three hours of exercise a day, decreasing to one hour on the 90-day plan. The exercises include jazzy leaps, star jumps and a number of aerobic moves. She eschews repetitious cardio exercises like running, which she claims bulk up muscles. Her plan also includes a series of 40 toning Pilates-style moves, which vary every ten days.

Incidentally, Tracy started out as a dancer. Today, She and Gwyneth have produced four exercise DVDs—each selling over 20,000 copies in Britain alone. There’s also Tracy’s book—“Tracy Anderson's 30-Day Method”—which is selling over 1,000 copies weekly.

Another famous personal trainer, Mike Ryan, helped Hugh Jackman get ripped for such films as X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  Ryan's secret is variety. Says Ryan, “From one workout to the next, I’ll always have something new to add to the equation. Our sessions are based on established principles, but I always try to bring new ideas to the table.”

Ryan got his start as a personal trainer when he moved to California where he began working at Gold's gym. As a football player, he’d been working out steadily and insists that his physique was his main marketing tool. He leveraged this visibility as much as possible, and people started asking him questions and commenting on his build. He then immersed himself in the science of body sculpting and before long, he started working with some high visibility athletes. As is typical, especially in California, celebrities and athletes party and do charity events together. Athletes would invite him to those functions and before he knew it, he’d be talking to the guys from Kiss, the Spice Girls, and Edward Norton, and it just mushroomed from there.

If you want to pursue a career as a personal trainer to the stars, you’ll need to sculpt your body, immerse yourself in the science of body building and weight control, and market yourself by hanging out in high visibility gyms where athletes train.
