You're Home on Holiday Break - Now What?

Posted by

It's December, the time when college students return home and hope to find part-time work for some extra money. It's not a bad idea, but maybe try a job that actually interests you this year. It's funny how work you actually enjoy doesn't always feel like work - sometimes it's a great learning experience, especially for those people who are a bit undecided career-wise. My advice is to begin calling companies of which you have a particular interest and ask a simple question: do you need help over the holidays?

This is easier said than done, of course. If you can afford to work for free (and put in some hours at a part-time job), companies may be more interested. A friend's daughter is in school to be a teacher and working at a local school for a few weeks when she's home. No, she's not getting paid but I'm sure she'll learn more than I learned in many of my graduate classes.
Hands-on experience: there is nothing like it. It's what separates you from everyone else in your major. It's something I wish I would have thought of in college; instead, I worked retail during my holiday break.
People say hindsight is 20/20 and it's quite true, so learn from my mistakes. Make calls now to organizations what would need your help - local non-profits or small companies. Who knows, if you impress them they might ask you back for the summer.
