With the 'millennial' generation entering the work-world, the focus lately has been on how social media effects networking and landing a great job and how recent graduates are taking advantage of their tech-savvy lives.

It's true that tried-and-true networking has changed, or evolved, with the times. Students hoping to land internships or entry-level jobs are realizing that what they lack in experience, they make up for in social media awareness. Consulting groups have written many articles giving young people advice on how to take advantage of social networking in the job search. This article by CareerArc's Robin Richards focuses on using social media to find employment. I think it makes perfect sense - if you're comfortable with social media, why not use it for purposes outside of posting status updates? One of the best ways to get noticed is to follow companies on social networking sites and see what they're looking for in new employees, interns, and consultants. You can garner a great deal of information this way and see if the company is trying to expand in the field you're interested in.

Also, try to seek out other young professionals in your field through social networking. You can join like-minded online communities and learn about upcoming events and lectures. It's important to get noticed, in person and online. Create profiles or accounts on sites that target what you're interested in and go from there - you can contact point people for certain events or see if companies are holding any public events. It's a virtual step in the right direction that may lead to a job offer.
