The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada draws thousands of engineers, consumers and innovators from around the world. Products introduced here often become trend-setting innovations embraced by consumers and industry observers.

Products like Sony Electronics' model SLT-A55V camera, for example. Named an International CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards winner, the SLT-A55V fully exploits Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology, which achieves the highest-level of auto focus speed for both still image and movie shooting.

Translucent Mirror Technology raises the performance bar for traditional DSLR technology, allowing the new camera to continuously and rapidly focus (with TTL phase-detection) while shooting stills and recording video—even in full HD. The A55 can shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second, making it the fastest in the industry for an APS-C size sensor-equipped interchangeable lens camera under $1,000.

Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the prestigious Innovations Design and Engineering Awards have recognized achievements in product design and engineering since 1976. Entries are judged based on the following criteria:

  • Engineering qualities, based on technical specs and materials used
  • Aesthetic and design qualities
  • The product’s intended use/function and user value
  • Unique/novel features that consumers would find attractive
  • How the design and innovation of the product compares to other products in the marketplace
