Setting Family Goals

Posted by

Setting solid family goals is a key component to a happy and successful life. Balancing work and family, among the other things we spend our time on, is critical if we are to lead a truly fulfilling existence. Far too often family goals get put on the back burner. Spouses and children take on a lesser role in favor of the almighty career.

Questions Worth Asking
In what might be a better approach to discovering what is truly important is to first ask yourself a few questions:
• How would you feel if you learned that your spouse, significant other, or son or daughter, had only one week to live?
• What kind of things would you have done with them?
• How much more time would you have spent with them?
• Where would you have gone together?
• What would you have said to them.

If your answers are different than what you have been doing with your family members, it might be time to make some changes. You can’t change yesterday, but you certainly can do things differently in the future.

Write Down Some of Your Goals
On your goal planning sheet write down some of the things you would like to do with your family. Include places to go, things to do, people to be with and be specific about how much time you would like to spend together. Think about the rewards that could happen for your family and yourself, when taking this approach.

Plan Your Family Goals Together
Initiate a conversation with them and find out what kinds of things they would like to do with you and together as a family. Discuss with them what you would like to do. As a team, immediately create a list of family goals and set time frames for completion of these goals. Put them on the family calendar and start taking action to schedule and follow through with these activities. By doing so, you and your family will be creating a future that will not be full of regrets, but one of good times and future memories.
