These days, it looks as though the city of brotherly love is becoming a vibrant city of art, music and even internet startup companies. Philadelphia has a long and ever-changing history. It was once the capital of the United States and home to the very first hospital. During the Revolutionary war, it was a hotbed of political intrigue and change. At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, Philadelphia changed into an industrial hub.
From the mid 1960's until recently, Philadelphia has been struggling with several issues that prevent it from becoming as popular and diverse as New York City, Los Angeles or even Chicago. In 1964, the city was home to race riots and in 2006, it had one of the highest homicide rates among the 10 largest cities.
However, Philadelphia is getting a new look, thanks to the large number of internet startup companies who call it home. In 2010, one startup, InviteMedia sold to Google for $81 million. In 2011, MyYearbook, a social network, sold for $100 million. Along with them, are many other tech companies who have made Philly their home base and resisted the urge to move to New York City or Silicon Valley.
New York City is just nearby, and many talented people end up moving rather than staying in Philly. However, with the vibrant mix of universities and businesses, the city has a diverse and thriving life. As always, the city continues to grow and change, adapting to the times. According to the latest census, tens of thousands of college grads have moved to Philadelphia in the past couple of years and the city continues to grow great new tech companies.
