Laugh It Up

Posted by

There was a research group who conducted a study. In this study they followed around four year olds and recorded the number of times they had a good hearty laugh. On average, they found that these youngsters would laugh approximately eighty times per day. These researchers also followed around 40 year olds and found on average, they laughed four times per day. That’s right, only four times per day. So, what happened between the age of four and forty? What caused the flame of inner joy that was expressed through laughter to be almost extinguished? Somehow, somewhere the energy of laughter dramatically diminished.

The late, Og Mandino, in his wonderful bestseller, The Greatest Salesman in the World, Part I, gives us some advice, “What can take place before this sun sets, which will not seem insignificant in the river of centuries? I will laugh at the world. And how can I laugh when confronted with man or deed which offends me so, as to bring forth my tears or my curses? Four words I will train myself to say until they become a habit so strong that immediately they will appear in my mind whenever good humor threatens to depart from me. These words, passed down from the ancients, will carry me through every adversity and maintain life in balance. These four words are: This too shall pass. I will laugh at the world”

Og goes on to say, “I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Never will I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will enjoy today’s happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not wine to be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown and reaped on the same day and this I will do, henceforth. I will laugh at the world.”

Creating laughter on a regular basis in your life is critical to living a fulfilling and happy life. Nothing in life is too serious that we can’t invoke a little laughter from the experience. Make it a point to look for three things every day that in which you can find humor, and have a good laugh over them. Remember, life is way too short only to be serious.
