LOGISTICS, The every specialty industry!

I just visited my favorite job search site, Nexxt. A quick generic search on the key word “Logistics” yielded over 12,000 job postings. Of course, a few of those are the same job description or type of position in different locations for the same company, but for one quick search, that’s a lot of options.

Here’s the point: While Logistics is recognized as an industry, the different positions within that heading are boundless. Most often, I hear that Logistics is the coordination of getting product deliverables from point “A” to point “B”. True enough. People think of the trains, trucks, airplanes, shipping docks and sometimes the big container ships. I do not think any of us has the time to explain to them how much more than that it really is.

Within the job headings under Logistics we are hard pressed to find a type of work that is NOT included. Pursuit of your career in this field can steer toward nearly any “industry within the industry”. In addition to the thousands of common descriptions like shipping, dispatching, buyers, clerks, etc. that we would all expect, here are some seem kinda new:

  • Senior Computer Science Technical Trainer

  • Paralegal Specialist

  • Manager-railroad emergency services

  • Associate Programmer/Analyst

  • Enterprise Reverse Logistics

  • Computer forensics Associate

  • Project Configuration Specialist

  • Loss Prevention Specialist

  • Customer Service Manager

  • Senior Data Warehouse Architect

  • Infraction Management, Program Manager

  • Oracle Financials Functional Analyst

  • Director Of Ad Ops And Content Creation

  • Director Of Infrastructure Management

  • Scrappy And Persuasive Ww Execution Leader (Real listing at Amazon)

  • Human Resources Leadership Development

  • Technical Program Manager Infrastructure Capacity Management

  • Software Development Engineer - Fulfillment Exception Management

  • Senior Manager, In stock Management (planning)

  • Senior Operations Research Scientist

  • Large Seller Technical Account Manager

Before you ask . . . no. I do not know what all of these people do. And no, I don’t even know what some of them mean. But YES, I do have a point. If you do a little research on your own, I think you will agree with me that no matter what your field of interest currently is, or what specialty skills you excel in, you will find a niche in our industry.

Common themes that rise to the top seem to all relate to throughput efficiency. Planning, tracking, statistics, database management, capacity techniques, and generally facilitating other company’s logistics as your business. This now needs marketing, advertising, client management, and fulfillment expediting. I even saw a post for medical personnel to be involved with the hospital supply chain divisions.

The charge to you: Choose and Focus!

Decide what your highest interest is and do the research on where it is best applied, how it is best learned, and where the jobs exist. I would suggest that you NOT “overspecialize” at first. Don’t narrow your focus so finitely that you don’t get to sample a myriad of the areas available, but be ready to morph. All of the seasoned pros I know in Logistics have worked in so many different positions that they often can’t remember them all!

Pursue the area that will be most profitable for your interests and make yourself available to other areas that need help in a rush time. You may find something you like better!

Did I mention developing those exceptional network and database skills?

You can do this!
