Confessing Your Sins To An iPhone? How A New Roman Catholic App is Helping Sinners

Can you really confess your sins to Apple? A new App can help you do just that.
Are you a sinner? Did you go out and party too hard and do some things you regret? Want to confess your sins? Don't worry, there is an App for that.

Yes, you heard me right. A new Roman Catholic App, approved by the Church available at Apple's App Store for $1.99, allows you to examine your conscience and make a list of your transgressions. In the description of the App, the developers say that “this App is the perfect aid for every penitent.”.

The app allows users to enter their name, age, gender and date of their last confession to create a password protected account. Then, it creates a personalized examination of conscience for each user, along with a step by step guide to the sacrament.

The Confession App walks users through a list of relevant sins for each of the 10 commandments, and offers a convenient checklist to mark off any of the sins you may be guilty of. If your particular sin isn't listed, not to worry, you can add in your own “custom sins” so that you won't forget. After all of the checklists are done, it then complies a cheat sheet to take into the confessional booth. Next, it offers a walk-through of the sacrament and offers helpful prompts for prayers.

According to Discovery News, the developers were inspired to create the App after hearing Pope Benedict's message at the 45th World Communications Day address. In his speech he suggested that new media, “if used wisely, can contribute to the satisfaction of the desire for meaning, truth and unity which remain the most profound aspirations of each human being.”

The developers hope that this app will get Catholics, both practicing and lapsed, to start talking about the sacrament. Their aim is to make it easier for those who have left the church to come back and start over.

The App has proven to be fairly popular; many people are downloading it for the laugh factor, but it seems to be doing its job by getting people to start the conversation about confession. It has a slick design and it appears that the developers tried hard to think of everything. Even still the people at EndGadget said “Now all it needs is a random sin selector: shake the phone to instantly get a wicked suggestion. That certainly could make boring Thursday nights at the dormitory a little more exciting.”

It remains to be seen what the long term success of the app will be, but one thing is for certain; this bold step is going to change the way that churches communicate with their members.

What do you think about the new confession app? Let me know in the comments?
