The Obama administration has tapped San Francisco's progressive CIO Chris Vein as deputy U.S. CTO for Innovation, reporting to U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra in the Office of Science and Technology Policy. His focus will be to help the federal government provide more innovation through technology. Vein, who served as San Francisco CIO for nearly four years has been praised for his forward thinking and innovation in a very tech savvy city. SF has been a major proponent of open data at the city-government level, and released hundreds of data sets online on its DataSF Web site. We hope that Vein can bring this government transparency to his new role.

The public sector has nothing to do with innovation. The term is used so freely, it lost any consequential significance.
