Are You a Cyber-Slacker? The Top Sites Blocked by Employers

Do you waste too much time goofing off online? Here are the top websites blocked by employer firewalls.

Picture this, you are working on several projects and even have a deadline looming, but you have to check your Twitter feed and your Facebook page. You see that your friend shared a link, so you click on that and read a few blog posts. Next, you see that your Facebook friend posted links to some very funny YouTube videos, so of course, you watch them. The next thing you know, you look at the clock and realize that several hours have passed. Sound familiar? If so, you may be guilty of cyber-slacking.

If you are an internet-enabled slacker, you aren't alone. In fact, this type of slacking is very common. Not just for people who are bored at work, but even people who are desperately looking for a job can get sidetracked this way. The problem is so widespread, in fact, it is one of the biggest problems in most offices. It lowers productivity and most companies don't enjoy paying people to surf the web. To combat the problem, many companies have put firewalls in place to block sites that have a high likelihood of enabling employees to waste time.

Here are the top websites blocked by employers:

  • YouTube – The popular video site is blocked by 11.9 percent of employers. Who doesn't enjoy watching videos of crazy cats and funny kids?

  • MySpace – This social networking site is blocked by 13 percent of employers. I was actually surprised by this, because I didn't think that anyone used MySpace anymore.

  • Facebook – 23 percent of employers block this site. At first, I was surprised that more companies blocked MySpace than blocked Facebook. Then, after thinking about it, I realized that there are legitimate business reasons for allowing employees to use Facebook.

  • Ebay – The online auction house is blocked by 1.6 percent of companies. So, doing the math, that means that I can still keep an eye on my auction while at work in about 98 percent of companies.

  • Hotmail – If you use Hotmail as your email provider, don't plan on checking it from work. 2.1 percent of employers block this site.

  • Twitter – At 4.2 percent of companies, you can't Tweet about how bored you are or how much you hate your boss. (of course, you shouldn't be doing this at any job)

Which sites do you company block? Have you found ways to get around the web-filtering software? Let me know in the comments.
