If you're serious about a career in the hospitality industry, you should consider joining the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). It represents all sectors in the lodging industry--from hotel companies to students. The AH&LA provides members with national advocacy on Capitol Hill, public relations and image management, education, research and information, and many other services to career professionals.

If you join AH&LA as a student member, you'll make valuable contacts as you engage in the many networking opportunities at seminars, conferences and events. Plus, you'll always be in the know as to what's happening in this ever-changing industry. And you'll get exposure, since your resume will be featured in the AH&LA Annual Resume Book, which is distributed to key industry executives.

To enter the hospitality field totally prepared, consider attending the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI). Here, you'll learn best practices and develop your skills as you prepare for your hospitality career. The institute has the nation’s largest collection of information and training books, videos and DVDs specific to the hospitality industry. They also offer professional certifications to improve your "marketability." (Student AH&LA members are eligible for special pricing on these services.)

You can also apply for one of 10 AH&LA Scholarships offered at 92 schools across the country. In one year, more than 300 scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 were awarded.

If you're ready to start your career in the lodging industry, visit their Career Center, where you can search and apply online for a wide range of openings. This includes entry level to management positions throughout the U.S. The job bank is free for job seekers.
