Title: Underwriting Director, National Accounts, Southeast and Western Divisions Location: Connecticut-Hartford The Opportunity Reporting to the National Accounts Underwriting Officer, the Underwriting Director's primary accountability is to execute and drive National Accounts underwriting quality, excellence and profitability for their assigned territory. The Director manages an underwriting team that will handle underwriting referrals from a defined geographic territory. The position will also play a supporting role in both the management of the National Accounts book of business, and the formulation of underwriting policies. Talent development and performance management are critical components of the Director's role as well. Responsibilities Underwriting Operations * Accountable for their assigned territories underwriting profitability, returns on surplus and growth objectives. * Manages a team of underwriters assigned to a specific geographic territory. Core team responsibilities include achieving underwriting excellence, handling underwriting consultation and using designated authority to shape the National Account book of business. * Maintains a high level of underwriting control over their assigned territory. Works with The Hartford's quality control resources to design and implement control procedures. Monitors underwriting performance for assigned territories. Provides coaching and feedback to underwriters on technical underwriting topics. * Assists in the development of underwriting policies for the National Account segment. May include development of underwriting positions or new products. * Works with The Hartford's Claims organization, or appropriate third party claim administrators, to monitor claim activity for National Account's book of business. Staff and Talent Development * Builds and maintains development plans for underwriting staff to ensure continuous growth in Home Office underwriting capabilities. * Provides coaching to staff on effective underwriting techniques and pipeline management practices. * Completes effective annual performance reviews for staff; contributes to overall group compensation strategy. * As appropriate, assists in the sourcing of new talent for the National Account segment. Segment Leadership * As a member of the leadership team for National Accounts, this individual will be expected to contribute to segment management activities, which may include: * Development of the annual Underwriting Pricing Guide * Responding to requests for information and analysis by senior leadership * Communication to internal Hartford constituents on the activities and direction of the segment * Traveling to Field Offices to support sales execution Growth Strategy and Field Support * Identify opportunities to expand the reach and profitability of The Hartford's National Account's business. * Works with Sales Directors in assigned territory to identify new sources of business flow. * Ability to act/serve as Underwriting Director for key large customers and producers. * Assists other Hartford businesses both from a sales and underwriting perspective as business necessitates. Qualifications * BS/BS degree; advanced degree in law, business, or risk management desirable. * 10 years Large Account underwriting is desirable. * Advanced financial and business strategy skills and experience. * Understanding of loss responsive rating programs (including large deductibles, SIRs and retrospective rating plans). Understands concepts of loss rating and layer pricing. * Understanding of fundamentals of account management / administration, financial agreements and collateral management. * Knowledgeable in National Accounts sales practices and pipeline management. * Management experience preferred, but not required. Competencies * Highly regarded for leadership capabilities. * Demonstrated client relationship management skills. * Ability to build strong relationships across an organization. * Superior critical thinking and decision making skills. * Excellent quantitative and qualitative analysis abilities with strong financial acumen and sound business instincts. * Solid communication skills, both oral and written. Compensation A competitive compensation package consisting of a base salary, target bonus and long term incentive will be offered to attract an outstanding individual. Relocation is also available as appropriate.
