Tax Manager - Indirect Tax - Incentives
Within Ernst & Young's Indirect Tax practice, we currently have a career opportunity for a Business Incentives Manager who is a seasoned consultant or economic developer with experience in securing and/or marketing, negotiating and implementing economic development incentive projects, including some combination of research, negotiation, documentation, implementation and/or compliance. The key to appropriately managing a company's overall state and local tax cost is to align its tax strategies with its business initiatives and then proceed with assisting the company with implementation. Our Indirect Tax practice provides the knowledge, experience, resources, and processes to bridge the gap between what is expected of a company's tax department and its current capacity. In addition to having depth of technical knowledge and experience, our professionals are knowledgeable about the business challenges companies are facing and how those challenges affect a company's state and local tax position. Our national network of practitioners focuses on both direct and indirect state and local taxes by offering a broad array of services. Responsibilities Be responsible for engagement development, project management, execution and results, as well as serving as a primary contact with clients and state and local public officials. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of tax credits and incentives, excellent research and investigative skills, negotiating ability, and capacity to interact with and obtain critical information from government officials and corporate executives. Demonstrate knowledge of and success implementing the following: negotiated incentives and discretionary grant programs; various state and local incentives such as: property tax abatements, employee training grant programs, tax increment financing, infrastructure grants, etc.; and statutory tax credits (investment, job creation, enterprise zone, research and development, etc). To qualify, candidates must have:
a bachelor's degree and approximately 5 years of related work experience; or a graduate degree and approximately 4 years of related work experience
a degree with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or a related field is preferred (an advanced degree in tax or law is highly desirable)
at least 3 years of experience in negotiated incentives (experience with tax credits preferred)
responsibility at a location/incentives consulting firm, state and local tax consulting firm or public/private sector economic development entity preferred
broad exposure to state and local tax and non-tax incentive programs
excellent managerial, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills
strong relationship development and project management skills (ideally including a network of relationships with state and local public officials and in industry)
