BACKGROUND:



CUNY?s Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) operates and oversees

University-wide programs that support the language, literacy and

college success of thousands of New Yorkers each year through such

notable programs as the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) and

CUNY Start.



CLIP, an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program for

CUNY students who need to improve their academic English language

skills, provides classes five hours a day, five days a week, in day

or evening sessions. CLIP is offered on 9 CUNY campuses in all 5

boroughs. CUNY Start, an innovative developmental studies program

provides intensive preparation in academic reading/writing, math,

and college success, enrolls prospective CUNY students who have been

accepted to college, but are not ready for college-level work based

on their scores on the CUNY Assessment Tests. CUNY Start offers a

full-time program for 25 hours a week that provides instruction in

both math and writing/reading and a part-time program for 12 hours a

week that provides instruction in either math or reading/writing.



This year, CUNY Start expanded its programs from 4 to 7 CUNY

campuses throughout the City.



GENERAL DESCRIPTION:



OAA is seeking to fill the position of Research Analyst. Under the

supervision of the University Director of CUNY Start, the Research

Analyst with support from research and evaluation experts in other

OAA programs, will design and conduct quantitative and qualitative

analyses utilizing a variety of educational data sets and databases

to evaluate the program. The Research Analyst will help to develop

and implement an evaluation agenda for CUNY Start and other programs

and will also provide critical support to OAA leadership by

collecting, coding, and organizing program data sets and developing

evaluation reports.
Other Duties:
DUTIES INCLUDE:



? Conduct statistical analysis focused on student enrollment,

retention, college admissions, persistence and graduation outcomes

at CUNY Start and CUNY (or other) colleges;



? Prepare datasets for research on CUNY Start, CLIP and other OAA

initiatives;



? Document procedures and calculations used to describe program

outcomes;



? Coordinate administration, collection and analysis of data as

required for program review;



? Respond to other periodic data requests in a timely and accurate

manner for internal and external stakeholders;



? Maintain selected databases and implement regular updates to ensure

data quality and completeness;



? Consult with CUNY research and evaluation staff on use of CUNY data

systems;



? Provide assistance and guidance to campus-based data staff and/or

central office data staff as needed;



? Work with CUNY Start leadership to share and communicate evaluation

findings in written reports, briefs, and presentations for a

variety of audiences; and



? Perform minimal data entry as ary:$60,000 - $70,000, commensurate with experience

Core Competencies/Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS:



The ideal candidates will have:



? Minimum Master?s Degree or advanced graduate training in education

or the social sciences, with at least four years of full-time

experience working in an applied quantitative research setting.



? Formal training in social science research methods and a strong

understanding of basic statistical concepts.



? Demonstrated proficiency in the use of statistical software (SPSS

syntax, STATA, and/or SAS) to analyze and manipulate large data

sets with complex structures.



? Strong understanding of program evaluation methods for education

demonstration projects, including an understanding of the need to

be responsive to agency requests for data.



? Experience querying data from a relational database.



? Experience implementing evaluation models using propensity score

matching, linear regression and logistical regression strongly

preferred.



? Detail-oriented and ability to keep accurate, well-organized

records.



? Ability to be flexible and to work carefully and quickly to meet

the demands of a busy program.



? Excellent oral and written communication skills.



? Experience working with database tools such as Microsoft Access,

SQL and/or Oracle Discoverer.



? Interest in education and issues of access to and success in

postsecondary education.

Position will remain open until 2/27/2012 or until filled.
