General Ledger Accountant

The General Ledger (GL) Accountant for the University is responsible to perform the following business office operations:  account reconciliations, create and post journal entries, verify and reconcile deposited revenue for Institutional Advancement and maintain fixed assets.  In addition, the GL Accountant will develop, implement and maintain internal control process and procedures.  This position reports to the Comptroller.






ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Fixed Assets – Identify and capitalize purchases deemed to be a fixed asset.  Create and post monthly depreciation expenses
  • Maintain the University’s Fixed Assets Schedule
  • Develop and maintain the fixed asset roll forward schedule.  Reconcile schedule to various general ledger accounts each month
  • Create and post journal entries monthly to assist with month end close schedule
  • Maintain and reconcile the travel advance account.  Create and post journal entries to clear out expenses on submitted expense report
  • Reconcile Advancement department revenue deposits each month to identified revenue and cash accounts
  • Reconcile cash accounts daily and bank accounts to the GL accounts monthly
  • Reconcile investment accounts and bank accounts to GL accounts monthly
  • Assist with the creation, development, and maintenance of internal control processes and procedures for various functional areas within the business office
  • Assist Comptroller with creating and updating any schedule or report as needed





 

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



  • Extensive knowledge of SCT Banner finance module and Microsoft Software business suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to analyze complex financial information and operational systems
  • Highly proficient oral and written communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in analyzing data and generating customized reports.
  • Possess effective analytical and problem solving skills
  • Very detailed and results oriented with an ability to set priorities, multi-task and met deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality



Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS


Education: Bachelors degree or equivalent in Accounting or Finance or related field from an accredited college/university.




EXPERIENCE



  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience
  • SCT Banner experience in the finance module is required
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a leadership role
  • 3 to 5 years of staff management and development within an accounting operation
  • Information systems experience is required with special emphasis with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Access, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Not for Profit accounting, budgeting and auditing procedures

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


 


WORK ENVIRONMENT


Normal office conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
