Director of Accounting

JOB SUMMARY: Performance of General Accounting and Financial Reporting functions resulting in complete and timely GAAP basis monthly financial statements including oversight of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Federal Excise Tax Claim reporting and related receivable. Candidate is responsible for implementing and maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure that each of various companies’ assets are adequately safeguarded and that all financial reporting is prepared in compliance with all financial policies.


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:



  • Is responsible to ensure that credit risk is balanced with business objectives, targets are met and that only valid claims with proper management authorization are paid.
  • Oversees the general accounting function, which includes inter-company as well as intra-companies’ accounting, cash management/reconciliation, financial reporting, balance sheet management (excluding inventory related items) and FET claim reporting and monitoring.
  • Accountable for ensuring that policies and procedures (internal controls) are in place to provide reasonable assurance that the company assets are protected.
  • Provides technical accounting GAAP guidance and support to all company entities. At times, this may include involvement in due diligence and other activities surrounding acquisitions/dispositions.
  • Responsible for proper timing and application of revenue recognition rules. This currently entails a real-time review of each instrument order and its terms for changes needed and determination of proper timing of revenue recognition. Involves significant interaction with Sales and Customer Service groups.
  • Ensures that company financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with company policies and US GAAP. Responsible for reviewing monthly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance.
  • Ensures that company financial reports are prepared in compliance with policies and directives.
  • Supervises the completion of Federal and State tax reporting requirements (including excise, property, sales and use, payroll and other local taxes), insurance reports and other reports required by government regulation. Also, assists outside CPA firm in dealing with tax related issues and meeting reporting requirements.
  • Ensures that the computer system continues to operate as required. Involved in validating/designing suggested changes to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met.
  • Coordinates work relating to both internal and external audits in the periodic review of the company financial records. Is further responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations, related to areas of responsibility, resulting from the audit findings.
  • Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities, noted above. Responsible for continued development of these associates.
  • Will have direct management responsibility of the following: Accountants ,  Accounts Payable/Billing Clerical



Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Ability to analyze financial data, identifying variances from standards, interpreting their impact and communicating them to management in a succinct, timely and efficient manner.
  • Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line profitability analysis.
  • Knowledge is normally acquired through a combination of the completion of a Masters Degree in Finance or Accounting, five to ten years of experience in senior-level finance or accounting position, and a CPA.
  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  • Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule.


Communication:



  • Communicate weekly financial results to the executive staff every week at the executive meetings.
  • Communicate daily to CEO on an as-needed basis.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITESLeverage strengths of the current Finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals. Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - Bachelor's degree in accounting.  Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
