Job Description

This position is responsible for leading Intermountain Healthcare’s efforts to identify opportunities to further its national and local brand through recognition for excellence, particularly in award competitions, award nominations and industry rankings.  This position will also collaborate with various departments and functions to promote the improvement of Intermountain’s performance on key metrics in order to strengthen our ability to receive appropriate recognition. In addition, this position will assist in a variety of efforts internally and externally to leverage our national brand. This position works with the Communications Department, Strategic Planning, Community Benefit, Finance, Clinical Programs, and other teams to optimize Intermountain’s position in industry rankings, award competitions, and other recognition opportunities.  Works collegially with other professionals inside and outside the organization to accomplish Intermountain and Communications Department goals and objectives.  Ensures Intermountain is following best practice with respect to award and ranking applications, readiness, and positioning.  Informs Intermountain leaders and operators of areas where Intermountain could improve performance to enhance recognition.  As appropriate, meets with organizations that sponsor awards and rankings to gather insights into recognition criteria and to present Intermountain’s case as effectively as possible.

Job Essentials:

  • Award and ranking applications, readiness, and positioning.  Responsible for planning and implementing Intermountain’s applications for awards (especially national awards) and optimizing its standing in industry rankings.  Works with other departments to ensure Intermountain is effectively positioned to meet rankings criteria and score well in ranking methodologies.  Works directly with media outlets and other organizations that sponsor or conduct rankings to ensure Intermountain’s case is understood and presented effectively.  Helps generate and leverage positive media coverage of Intermountain and supports Intermountain’s brand nationally and locally.
  • Project management responsibility:  Performs project management responsibilities for awards, rankings, nominations, and other recognition opportunities and works collegially with others in Intermountain to accomplish goals.  Manages corporate communications consultants and/or other staff as needed.
  • National brand responsibility:  Assists the V.P., Communications with implementing, maintaining, and monitoring Intermountain’s national brand strategy and standards. Identifies national and local opportunities to enhance Intermountain’s brand reputation through speeches, presentations, papers, etc. Works within approved guidelines regarding payment to Intermountain for speeches and presentations by senior executives.               
  • Research:  Commissions new research and uses existing research to create and evaluate recognition plans and initiatives.
  • Uses all available tools and communications—e.g., social media, Internet, public relations, promotions, community outreach conferences, publications, etc. — to achieve and highlight recognition goals and other communications goals.
  • Works with Intermountain Healthcare teams:  Mobilizes system-wide communications teams, as needed to accomplish goals.  Works with senior-level clinical teams of managers and physicians.  Works closely and collegially with media relations professionals to maximize positive media coverage of awards and rankings; similarly works with marketing professionals to arrange for appropriate advertising.
  • Works with vendors and outside organizations as appropriate.
  • Counsels senior leadership teams with respect to awards, rankings, and other recognition opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

Must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, project management, grant-writing, communications or a field requiring writing skills, analytic skills, and project management skills -AND- 8 years of professional experience in business, corporate communications, strategic planning, public relations, marketing, grant-writing, project management, account management, or consulting  (Degree is verified and must be obtained through an accredited institution)

OR

  • Master’s Degree in business, project management, grant-writing, communications or a field requiring writing skills, analytic skills, and project management skills -AND- 7 years of professional experience in business, corporate communications, strategic planning, public relations, marketing, grant-writing, project management, account management, or consulting

In addition:

  • Five or more years experience in the role of a communications professional with expertise in strategic planning, as well as creating and managing effective communications plans and projects; Must demonstrate the ability to understand and adapt communications to different target audiences
  • Experience in a role requiring quantitative and data-analysis skills and the ability to understand, gather, present, and synthesize data;Must be detail-oriented and able to understand and analyze award and ranking methodologies and recommend ways Intermountain can optimize its standing
  • Experience in a role requiring excellent presentation, writing, editing, and interviewing skills
  • Experience in, and a basic understanding of, business and how businesses operate is required; The ability to counsel and work with others within the Intermountain Healthcare organization is essential
  • Experience in a role requiring the demonstration of research skills; Must be able to plan, execute, and interpret research in all phases of the business and communications process
  • Experience in a role requiring the ability to assertively define, pursue, and achieve goals
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and other basic applications
Physical Requirements
  • Speaking, hearing / listening, seeing, manual dexterity
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in business, communications, or a field requiring writing, data analysis, and project management skills 
  • Experience using applications such as the Adobe Creative Suite, SharePoint, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Experience in healthcare
